On “Mornings with Maria” on Fox Business, I discussed George Soros’s prediction that Xi Jinping will fall from power, as well as the latest on Russia and Nancy Pelosi’s crooked stock trading—a new twist on the Democrats’ “equity” crusade. Talking points below.
I also enclose a press release from the new America First Policy Institute announcing the appointment of my colleague Steve Yates to head the new China policy initiative.
Finally, on our latest podcast edition of “Simon & Whiton,” Mark and I discussed Jeff Zucker’s abrupt departure from CNN and what it means for the discredited, low-ratings network.
Talking Points
Pelosi: She and her husband bought call options in December for 10,000 shares of semiconductor manufacturer Micron, knowing then that she would bring up semiconductor subsidies in the House. At a strike price of $50, Pelosi already has a potential profit of $340,000. She just advanced the 2900-page “America COMPETES” act, which is filled with $45 billion in pork including big payola for semiconductor companies. Pelosi is engaging in the equivalent of insider trading. (Can pointless Kevin McCarthy put down his hairdryer to make some hay from this?) TSMC, Intel, and Samsung are already building new fabs in the USA and these and other suppliers will soon catch up with demand. The industry does not need handouts or central planning.
Zucker: Conservatives owe him a debt of gratitude for first ruining NBC and then ruining CNN, while draining hundreds of millions of dollars from the networks for himself and his lover. Why did his paramour not resign as well?
CNN: The network has lost all credibility and finished 2021 in 31st place among cable stations. Discovery now owns the network and its choice to succeed Zucker will indicate whether it has any shot at revival. It is probably too far gone to fix.
Spotify: The company is the subject of a boycott effort by washed-up singers no one has heard of in decades. They’re mad that Spotify has a $100 million contract with Joe Rogan for his wildly popular podcast. First, Neil Young told Spotify to remove his music. Then, Joni Mitchell, an even more obscure aging hippie from the 70s followed suit. No woke effort by elitist snobs to censor someone would be complete without Prince Harry and his hideous wife, Megan Markle. They have a $25 million deal with Spotify and, despite producing very few podcasts, aren’t giving up the money, but they are expressing deep concern about Rogan. It was a mistake for Rogan to apologize and Spotify will probably cave at some point.
Soros: His speech at the Hoover Institute was naive and based on poor assumptions. It is nice that a bigtime lefty is in favor of Xi Jinping’s demise, but it will not happen on the timeline Soros suggests. Like the neocons, Soros has a Marxist view of historical inevitability—of unseen forces of history causing desirable outcomes. In fact, people have to do things to make history. WuFlu and turbulence in the real estate market alone will not challenge Xi’s position or that of the CCP. We need a concerted political warfare effort designed to put pressure on the CCP and cause it to focus inward on China. This is impossible while we have a governing party and president who think America sucks. We need the opposite: Reagan’s formula of internal and external strength and confidence.
Russia: Biden has hyped the probability that Russia will invade Ukraine so he can claim non-invasion as a success. But his unenforceable threats have given Putin an incentive to take some overt act just to underline the limits of U.S. power and NATO. Instead of focusing on deterring China, we are poised to fight the wrong war, with the wrong adversary, at the wrong time, and in the wrong place. Republicans often seem just as bad as Democrats on this matter.
Press Release About Steve Yates
America First Policy Institute Launches China Policy Initiative
Renowned China Expert and Former White House Official (2001-2005) Steve Yates Appointed Chair
February 3, 2022
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) launched the China Policy Initiative and announced the appointment of the Honorable Steve Yates as Chair. The Initiative will advance policies that reverse decades of Washington’s accommodation of Communist China that nurtured an existential rival and advocates strategies to protect our Nation and livelihood without war.
“For decades, D.C. insiders and Wall Street elites perpetuated the lie that American engagement with Communist China would cause that nation to open, to liberalize, and to reform. They were wrong,” said Linda McMahon, Chair of the Board of the AFPI, “Communist China today poses the single largest and systemic threat to Americans’ security and prosperity and affects them in every sphere of their lives.”
The China Policy Initiative will be uniquely situated inside the America First Policy Institute and bring multi-faceted expertise across multiple disciplines to address the threat Communist China poses to Americans. The China Policy Initiative will draw upon the intellectual leadership and resources from all 21 policy centers within the AFPI to provide new research and ideas and identify new threats emerging from the Chinese Communist Party. Our approach begins with understanding and responding to hard truths about Communist China. We add to that by demonstrating how to take a “whole of society” approach to meet and overcome these challenges.
“We deeply respect the Chinese people and their storied history and contributions to the human experience,” said Steve Yates, Chair of the China Policy Initiative. “However, from stealing Americans’ jobs to the theft of American intellectual property, to being the world’s top polluter of our air and oceans, to its indoctrination of Americans through cooptation of Wall Street, Hollywood, and major cultural and educational institutions, and, of course, the fact that COVID-19 emerged from China and killed 1 million Americans, the threat we face from the Chinese Communist Party is everywhere and real.”
The China Policy Initiative Introduces “China 2022: An Olympic-Sized Threat”
Beginning Friday, February 4, 2022, AFPI’s China Policy Initiative will release daily information highlighting AFPI research on different aspects of the threats from Communist China as well as the needed America First approach in addressing it. The effort will include a keynote event featuring government and other leaders who have been at the forefront of addressing Communist China’s threats.
“As the 2022 Winter Olympic games prepare to open in Communist China, AFPI salutes all our athletes and wishes Team USA the best of luck in their competitions,” said Brooke Rollins, President and CEO. “This 16-day propaganda spectacle should not fool the world. Communist China poses an Olympic-sized threat to freedom-loving people across this country and the free world.”
America First Policy Institute and its China Policy Initiative will host additional events related to the Olympics in the coming weeks. Details to follow.
